This compelling late 20th-century studio ceramic vessel pair exemplifies the expressive freedom and material experimentation that defined post-modern American ceramics of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Conceived as a deliberate sculptural pairing, the works engage in a visual dialogue through contrast of scale, shared surface language, and intentionally irregular form.
Both vessels are hand-built and richly layered with slip decoration, applied relief elements, and painterly gesture. Abstract striping, botanical references, stitched and ribbon-like attachments, and tactile surface modulation reflect a confident studio practice unconcerned with strict functionality. The glazes exhibit intentional crazing and variation consistent with low-fire or experimental firing processes of the period, enhancing depth and visual movement.
The larger vessel carries notable presence and complexity, while the smaller form offers a grounded counterpoint—together creating a balanced sculptural conversation that rewards close viewing from multiple angles. A visible firing crack at the base of the larger vessel appears stable and original to the firing process and is characteristic of ambitious, hand-built studio work from this era.
These pieces are best understood not as utilitarian pottery, but as ceramic sculpture—objects intended to inhabit space, convey artistic intent, and function as focal points within a thoughtfully curated interior. Ideal for display on pedestals, consoles, or open shelving in contemporary, post-modern, or eclectic environments.
Sold as a matched sculptural pair.

Both vessels exhibit intentional surface variation, glaze irregularities, and firing-related crazing inherent to the artist’s process. The larger vessel shows a visible firing crack at the base, which appears stable and original to the firing process and does not detract from the sculptural integrity of the work. No restorations or later repairs observed. Minor surface wear consistent with age and handling. less
