The unique and unusual Magneto floor lamp was designed by Gilbert Watrous (1918-1991) for the 1951 design competition organized by MoMA, the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The lamp was first produced by the American company Heifetz and subsequently, in the 1950s, by the Dutch company Atelier Artiforte, led by Hendrik Fillekes (1918-1983). Fillekes produced several variations of this wonderful, timeless design, making it a truly special piece. It was manufactured in a very limited run during the 1950s and assembled entirely by hand.
This lamp is distinguished by its elegant, straight lines that connect its long chrome arm to a spherical magnet, hence the name 'Magneto'. Thanks to this perfectly balanced and aligned design, the lamp can be oriented and moved to any point, offering functional and omnidirectional light.
The significance and rarity of this mid-century design gem is underscored by its cylindrical shade with a translucent back, which appears to reveal an eye when illuminated, casting light in two directions simultaneously and creating exceptional ambient illumination. Its base is also distinct from those found on other documented Magneto lamp models.
After an exhaustive search, we have been unable to locate any other lamp exactly like this one, indicating that it is an extremely unusual model and, to date, never before seen on the market. This undoubtedly makes it an exciting opportunity for lovers and collectors of mid-century design. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
