These 20th-century female figure studies aren't asking to be understood. They insist on being felt.
Rooted in the hard-edged confidence of Art Deco design, each drawing treats the female body as structure rather than subject. Muscle masses are blocked in with broad, decisive charcoal strokes, almost architectural, while thinner, restless lines define the contours, searching and correcting in real time. One figure turns her back, all tension and spine; the other holds in profile, contained but unyielding. They read less as poses than as positions.
Both are signed "Kwiatkowska," a name that evades easy attribution. Beyond the signature, the trail runs cool except for one telling note: four works by the same artist hang in the Ralph Lauren collection installed with intention in the bar at RL Restaurant in Chicago. Provenance by proximity, not paperwork.
These are not polite drawings. They belong to the 20th century’s belief in the body as power, not decoration. Hang them where elegance needs muscle and mystery is welcome.
