The design was directly inspired by 18th-century French Provincial aesthetics, specifically the Louis XV period. The John Widdicomb Company, a long-standing American furniture manufacturer established in 1897, shifted its focus to these elegant French styles with the help of designers like Ralph Widdicombe starting in the early 20th century.
