This rare set of three early rustic armchairs originates from the late 18th to early 19th century and was handcrafted in the Alpine region of Central Europe, most likely Southern Germany, Austria, or Switzerland.
Each chair is made entirely by hand from solid wood, using naturally curved branches for the armrests and crest rail. The seats consist of thick, solid planks with live edges, while the round backrests feature a central opening—an authentic functional detail found in early vernacular furniture. Tool marks, axe traces, and irregularities are clearly visible, confirming pre-industrial craftsmanship.
The chairs retain their original surface and rich patina, developed over more than two centuries of use. No modern restorations are visible, and all wear is consistent with age. Structurally sound and stable, the set embodies the principles of vernacular design: function, durability, and local material use.
Finding multiple matching examples from this period is extremely rare, as such chairs were typically produced individually for rural homes, inns, or monasteries. As a complete ensemble, this set holds significant historical and decorative value.
These chairs are highly sought after for wabi-sabi, Japandi, and rustic-modern interiors and appeal equally to collectors, interior designers, and boutique hospitality projects.
