author angelo biancini born on april 24, 1911, in castelbolognese (ravenna), sculptor and modeler angelo biancini began working at a very young age as a plasticator for paolo zoli's ceramic factory 'la faience' in the late 1920s. In 1930, at the art institute of florence, he became a pupil of libero andreotti and established a deep human and artistic relationship with him. In 1932, he made his debut as a ceramist, presenting several majolica works and sculptures. Between 1933 and 1935, he collaborated occasionally with mario morelli's studio, for which he created several sculptures and monotypes. In 1933, he participated in the milan triennial. In 1934 and 1936, he participated in the venice biennale and again in the milan triennial. In 1937, he won the gold medal for decorative plastic arts at the universal exposition in paris. From 1936 to 1940, he was called upon to collaborate with guido andlovitz on the artistic direction of the 's.c.i.' (società ceramica italiana di laveno). During his time at s.c.i., biancini devoted himself mainly to small, medium, and large-scale statuary, producing a series of works that differed considerably from the current production both in terms of their plastic characterization and the quality of the color range of the enamels. In 1940, he won first prize at the milan triennial and the venice biennale with his high relief orfeo. In 1942, he began teaching at the art institute for ceramics in faenza and, after the war, he was appointed to the chair of plastic arts, formerly held by domenico rambelli, which he retained until 1981. In 1946, he collaborated with anselmo bucci's studio in faenza and won first prize at the international ceramics competition in faenza with his bas-relief annunciazione. In the years that followed, he taught plastic decoration at the gaetano ballardini state art institute in faenza. In 1957, he won the faenza prize with his majolica work gesù fra i dottori (jesus among the doctors) and in 1958 he presented a solo exhibition at the venice biennale. During these years, the artist's collaborators included the young eda melandri. In the following years, angelo biancini was invited to contribute to the education of young ceramists at the 'torviscosa' ceramic workshops. In 1984, he participated in the 'maestri della ceramica' exhibition as part of the national ceramics competition in faenza. Angelo biancini died in castel bolognese in 1988. Many of his ceramics are preserved in the museum of faenza and a personal room is dedicated to him in the vatican museums' collection of modern religious art.
