This fine Japanese Satsuma ware incense burner (kōro) was produced during the Meiji period, circa 1890–1905, and is signed Satsuma Shunzan zō (薩摩 俊山 造). The piece represents a high-quality example of late 19th-century Kyoto-type Satsuma, combining refined craftsmanship with rich decorative complexity.
The koro is raised on three legs and fitted with a domed lid surmounted by a finely modelled shi-shi lion finial. The body is potted in a thin, well-fired cream-coloured ceramic with a dense, even crackle glaze. Decoration is executed in polychrome enamels with extensive gilding, incorporating heavy moriage work and dense gold pointillé, applied consistently around the entire circumference.
Panelled reserves depict detailed courtly genre scenes with multiple figures in ceremonial dress, set within architectural and landscape elements. The painting is precise and controlled, avoiding the overcrowded appearance typical of later mass-export wares. The ornamental borders feature hexagonal and geometric motifs outlined in black, with a rich palette including iron red, turquoise, green and soft lilac tones, characteristic of higher-grade Kyoto Satsuma production.
The base bears the Shimazu clan mon alongside the red and gilt signature cartouche of Shunzan, confirming authorship. Pieces by Shunzan are sought after for their balance of sculptural quality, restrained composition and refined surface decoration.
Condition
Condition is good antique condition. There are several internal hairlines inside the lid, one side handle has been professionally restored, and there is a very fine glaze hairline to one foot, barely visible. The shi-shi finial is intact and the overall presentation remains strong.
