This exceptional Japanese cloisonne enamel vase dates to the Meiji period, circa 1880–1890, and is confidently attributed to the workshop of Gotō Seizaburō, one of the most technically accomplished cloisonne artists of the late nineteenth century. The vase is decorated on a deep, lustrous dark ground with finely rendered birds shown among flowering plants and seasonal foliage. The composition demonstrates a refined naturalism, with delicately drawn wirework defining petals, leaves, and feathers, complemented by carefully shaded enamels that create depth and movement.
Encircling the upper border is a meticulously executed geometric band composed of repeating patterned units. This distinctive border is a critical element in the attribution. A closely related cloisonne enamel plate in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum displays the same geometric pattern framing its design and is documented as a work acquired by Gotō. The correspondence between the two works extends beyond ornament alone and is evident in the precision of the wire placement, the harmony of the color palette, and the overall compositional discipline.
The vase exemplifies the hallmarks of Gotō’s mature Meiji period production, including restrained elegance, technical sophistication, and a seamless integration of decorative borders with pictorial imagery. The interior is finished in a rich blue enamel, reflecting the high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail associated with elite cloisonne workshops of the period.
