Mid-19th Century Victorian Ebonized Tilt-Top Table with Hand-Painted Chinoiserie Decoration
This table has been in our family for generations and it is a fine antique Victorian-era tilt-top occasional table, dating to approximately circa 1835–1870. The square top features a hand-painted Chinoiserie scene on a rich black (ebonized) ground, depicting stylized trees, fencing, water, and architectural elements accented in gilt and subtle color.
The table rests on a turned and fluted pedestal, highlighted with original gilt striping, and supported by a tripod base with carved paw feet. The top tilts vertically via its original iron latch mechanism, a practical and characteristic feature of 19th-century parlor tables.
Construction details, hardware, and wear are consistent with age. The painted surface appears original, with honest age-appropriate wear, and the table is structurally sound.
The top measures 26.5" X 27.5" and the table stands at 27" high.
