19th-century Swedish pine secretary or "bureau" retaining its original "Allmoge" painted decoration, dated 1850 with monogram noted on the interior right door and central drawer. The exterior features traditional Swedish fluted diamond motifs on the desktop panels, along with a faux wood–painted background typical of the period. Floral motifs in deep teal and green decorate the upper and lower panel doors.
The secretary is crowned with a softly curved bonnet. The upper cabinet opens to two standard shelves and an upper half shelf originally intended for displaying family silver spoons. The writing surface opens on hinges and rests on the narrow drawer below, revealing ten small interior drawers painted a darker and distressed blue.
Age-related separation is visible in the lower cabinet panels and along the sides; along with scratches, cracks, minor nicks, and small gouges consistent with long use. Keys and locks no longer function; keys are used as pulls. Restored, strong, stable, and ready for use. A beautiful and exceptional example of Swedish painted furniture.
