University Press. This slim, 109-page hardcover has a light beige cloth spine and Art Deco patterned, blue & gilt-decorative covers. There is a blue & gold leather title on the spine. This is an illustrated, First Edition Thus in very good condition for its age. The book details Opera in England before. 'The Beggar's Opera,' its conception, its author, John Gay (fronts portrait), the plot, characters and music and later Ballad Operas. There are eight small b/w glossy illustrations (including fronts). The interior of the book is clean, bright, unmarked, unfoxed. The title page is tanned due to the tissue guard in front of it. The pages are top stained dark blue. The previous owner penned their name on the first blank page. The last owner of the book, "The Faux Library" Hollywood prop house, left a small stamp on the inside back cover. Otherwise, no marginalia on the texts' deckled pages. The covers have some mild shelf-wear along the edges, as expected. For some unexpected reason, a portion of the leather title on the spine can be found, hidden, between the last blank pages of the book. This is an excellent book for collectors of vintage and antique decorative book covers, Art Deco covers, as well as those with an interest in opera history and/or Cambridge University Press. The book has been reprinted as a softcover; but hardcovers are uncommon. This 104-year old hardcover will be sent, carefully packed, with tracking. See less
