Anton Refregier (1905-1979) was a prominent Russian-born American painter and muralist celebrated for his contributions to Social Realism and public art in the mid-20th century. Best known for his monumental mural cycle History of San Francisco (1940-1948) at the Rincon Annex Post Office, a landmark WPA commission, Refregier's work blended modernist abstraction with humanist themes. He exhibited widely during his career, including at the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Corcoran Gallery, and his paintings and murals are held in major public collections such as the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
