Hand-thrown studio pottery jug by American potter Greg Shooner, signed and dated 1995.
This substantial example stands 13 inches tall and features a lively sgraffito-incised bird motif rendered in Shooner’s characteristic folk-inspired style.
Finished in a rich, iron-toned brown glaze with a glossy surface, the jug has an elegant elongated form and strong sculptural presence. Signed and dated works from Shooner’s mid-career period are especially sought after for their craftsmanship, clarity of attribution, and decorative appeal.
Details:
Maker: Greg Shooner
Origin: United States
Date: 1995
Material: Glazed stoneware
Decoration: Hand-incised (sgraffito) bird
Signature: Signed and dated on base
Condition: Very good vintage condition with light wear consistent with handmade pottery. Shooner pieces are made to mimic early American pottery with crackle glazes, black spots were glaze is lost and scratched surface which shows the underglaze and clay body underneath. These are not flaws but part of the meticulous nature of the Shooners craft to replicate historic red ware.

"Shooner American Redware - handcrafted in the USA by Greg and Mary Shooter. Continuing the traditions of American potters dating to 1630, Greg Shooner and Mary Spellmire-Shooner re-create authentic redware pottery at their Oregonia, Ohio studio. Greg and Mary use their years of pottery experience to make a ware that is unrivaled in its interpretation of rare antiques. They work alone, with a passionate commitment to quality and artistic control. A lifelong interest in art led them separately to pottery , then together to the study of redware"
The jug’s rounded body and narrow mouth create a strong, balanced silhouette, while the hand-drawn bird design adds folk art character and visual movement. A beautiful standalone decorative object for a shelf, console, or curated pottery collection.
