Each figure is decorated with a vibrant turquoise-blue ground, embellished with a meticulous "clover" wirework pattern and a variety of colorful blooming peonies in shades of pink, red, and yellow with trailing green vines. True to traditional symbolism, the pair consists of a male and a female: the male (on the left) rests his paw upon a decorated orb representing the world and supremacy, while the female (on the right) protects a small cub, symbolizing nurture and the cycle of life. Their heads are characterized by powerful, open-mouthed expressions and stylized, tightly curled manes finished in a deep charcoal patina that provides a striking contrast to the luminous enamel work on their bodies.
