19th Century N.W. Persian Serapi Carpet ( 10" x 13'4" - 305 x 405 )
Antique Serapi Room Size Wool Rug, Country of Origin: Iran / Persia, Circa Date: 1880s. This magnificent example of a Serapi rug originates from the Heriz region of Northwest Persia, renowned for producing some of the most durable and visually striking carpets of the late 19th century. The Serapi designation often refers to the finer weave quality and more sophisticated color palette found in these early productions, distinguishing them from later Heriz pieces.
The central design features a bold, highly stylized diamond medallion set against a field of rich madder red. This powerful composition is defined by angular, stepped outlines and sharp corners, characteristic of geometric rugs from this area. The palette is expertly balanced, utilizing soft blush pinks, deep indigo, and subtle celadon greens that contrast beautifully with the saturated ground color, demonstrating the use of high-quality natural dyes.
Woven to a substantial scale, this piece is classified among the finest room size rugs, designed to anchor a formal drawing room or library. The craftsmanship reflects the peak of 19th-century weaving tradition within the greater canon of Iranian / Persian rugs, where the weaver's interpretation translated classical court designs into powerful, abstracted compositions suitable for Western export markets.
Preserved in excellent condition for its age, this Serapi exhibits the desirable patina and robust wool quality only found in genuine pieces circa 1880. It represents a superb investment piece for collectors seeking authentic antique rugs that combine history, artistry, and exceptional decorative impact suitable for contemporary interiors.
