Maybe Teec Nos Pos, but surely influenced by Caucasian weaving, but with a classic Navajo palette emphasizing flannel grey, ecru, black, camel and red. The abrashed field shows two lightly connected, multiply stepped and hooked panels with ecru centers. Angular, squared twisted partial borders frame the sides and in each field corner has an arrowhead cross. Well-articulated pattern and in fine condition.
Antique Navajo American Gray 1920s Rug, Circa Date: 1920s. This exceptional American textile represents the apex of early 20th-century weaving from the Navajo Nation, showcasing the powerful transition from traditional blanket designs to floor coverings. As a significant example within the broader category of antique rugs, this piece captures a moment when indigenous artistry was adapting to commercial demand while retaining its spiritual and cultural integrity.
The palette is particularly striking, centered around a variegated, smoky gray field that provides a sophisticated foundation. This neutral tone is dramatically offset by sharp accents of cochineal red and deep black, creating high contrast that emphasizes the structural clarity of the design. The use of natural dyes results in the subtle striations, or *abrash*, visible across the field, making it a superb addition to any collection of gray color rugs.
Characterized by bold, stepped elements and powerful central diamonds, the composition is rigorously symmetrical. Traditional iconography, including stylized crosses and arrow motifs, is integrated seamlessly into the overall geometric design. This emphasis on angular symmetry and repeating forms is characteristic of the Two Grey Hills or Ganado styles popular during this period, reflecting a mastery of loom technique.
Woven with tightly spun wool, this textile exhibits the durability and flat-woven structure typical of the region's best production. Its manageable dimensions classify it as a small scatter size rug, making it an ideal accent piece for a hallway, bedside, or layered within a contemporary setting where its historic provenance can be fully appreciated.
