Mid 18th Century W. Ningxia Carpet 5'6" x 7'2
Antique Chinese - Ningxia Chinese Ivory 1750s Rug, Circa Date: 1750s. This exceptional example of Qing Dynasty weaving hails from the Ningxia region, renowned for its sophisticated, restrained aesthetic and masterful use of open space. The piece presents a rare and highly sought-after palette, dominated by a luminous field that immediately draws the eye. We are proud to include this museum-quality textile in our collection of antique rugs.
The main field is rendered in a soft, aged ivory color, which has mellowed beautifully over nearly three centuries, acquiring a subtle patina of age. Scattered across this expansive space are small, abstract blue motifs—perhaps stylized cloud bands or simplified symbols—that float delicately without forming a restrictive central medallion. This sparse decoration emphasizes the purity of the ground color and the luxurious quality of the hand-spun wool.
A dramatic visual contrast is established by the broad, saturated indigo border, which frames the composition with authority. The border design incorporates multiple guard stripes featuring intricate geometric saw-tooth patterns and subtle, faded floral elements, characteristic of mid-18th-century Chinese court influences. Despite its remarkable age, the weaving structure remains robust, testifying to the enduring skill of the Ningxia artisans.
While the pattern elements are distinct, their distribution across the field suggests an allover design sensibility, prioritizing texture and color balance over formal structure. Given its dimensions, this piece functions perfectly as a small scatter size rug, ideal for adding historical depth and subtle color contrast to a refined interior space. This Ningxia textile is a testament to enduring classical Chinese artistry.
