Late 19th Century Caucasian Shirvan Carpet ( 3'5" x 4'5"- 104 x 134 cm )
This antique Caucasian Shirvan rug from the 1890s is a magnificent example of traditional tribal weaving, known for its intricate details, geometric precision, and rich natural dyes. Crafted in the Shirvan region of the Caucasus (modern-day Azerbaijan), these rugs are highly sought after by collectors for their unique character and history.
The rug features a dense, complex arrangement of geometric motifs, including stacked octagonal medallions and latch-hook diamonds that fill the central field. This fine detail and use of traditional symbols, often with protective meanings, is characteristic of the region's artistry. The field is framed by a series of distinct guard borders featuring traditional patterns like chevron (typical of the Baku area) and serrated leaf designs.
Woven with natural vegetable dyes, the rug showcases a vibrant yet balanced palette. The dominant colors include rich madder reds, deep indigo blues, and accents of ivory, saffron yellow, and camel, which have developed a beautiful patina with age.
It is a hand-knotted piece, primarily using a Turkish (symmetrical) knot on a wool or sometimes mixed wool and cotton foundation. This technique results in a relatively fine, tight weave and a low, durable pile, which is different from the bolder, more loosely woven rugs from the South Caucasus regions like Kazak.
This rug embodies the artistic heritage of the late 19th-century Caucasian weavers, making it a timeless piece of functional art for any interior.
