This beautiful Ardabil design antique late 19th century Indian Agra Gonbad rug is a stunning example of historic Indian weaving that reflects a deep reverence for classic Persian rug design heritage. Crafted in the late 1800s within the Indian Agra tradition, this Gonbad design area rug incorporates the timeless Ardabil motif language — a refined aesthetic inspired by influential Persian carpets — while offering the distinctive interpretation and skilled craftsmanship that define Indian weavings of this period.
The rug’s field is adorned with an elegant Ardabil-inspired medallion pattern, characterized by symmetrical geometry, layered arabesques, and balanced botanical forms that echo centuries-old carpet art. These motifs — executed with clarity and rhythmic precision — give the design a sense of visual serenity and structural refinement. The Gonbad layout, with its distinctive medallion placement and complementary field ornamentation, further enhances the rug’s sense of proportion and aesthetic harmony.
Woven in high-quality wool with a durable foundation, antique area rugs like this combine textural warmth and tactile depth with enduring performance. Its thoughtful design and timeless palette make it a versatile addition to a wide range of décor styles — from traditional interiors to curated contemporary settings where historic textiles serve as focal points.
Perfect for living rooms, formal lounges, or dining areas that benefit from an elegant statement, antique Agra rugs from India like this example offer both historic resonance and refined decorative appeal. Whether featured as a centerpiece or layered within an interior scheme, this magnificent rug from India brings classic design legacy, artisanal craftsmanship, and timeless beauty to any space.
The whole 35 feet of the Ardebil carpet, medallion, field arabesques, lamp pendants and cartouche/octofoil border has been compressed into this more convenient room size antique Indian city carpet with a blue-green field instead of the archetypes dark blue. Only the corner quarter medallions have been omitted in the proportion change. This is a very well-woven antique in good condition.
