A really lovely early 20th century Japanese porcelain vase, hand-painted with crayfish swimming through water plants on both sides. The colors are warm and soft, with iron red, green, and gold that feel very natural and calm.
The shape is simple and well balanced, with decorative bands at the neck and foot in blue, red, and gilt. They’re colorful without being loud and frame the painted scene nicely.
The base bears a blue underglaze “Ei” mark, a symbol associated with prosperity and commonly found on Japanese export porcelain from the early 1900s.
This is an easy piece to live with — great on a shelf, console, or mixed into a collection of Asian ceramics.
