This impressive late 19th century French chromolithograph depicts "The Last Supper", after Leonardo da Vinci’s world-famous mural in Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan.
Printed in Paris circa 1890 by Becquet Frères for the prestigious publisher MAESANI, this work belongs to the golden age of French decorative and religious art printing. During this period, Paris dominated the European market for high-quality chromolithographs, which were widely collected by churches, aristocratic homes, and bourgeois salons.
The subtle layering of pigments, the refined modeling of the figures, and the architectural depth clearly distinguish this piece from later 20th century reproductions. The colors remain rich and balanced, especially the deep ultramarine blues and warm ochres, which were hallmarks of high-end Parisian lithographic studios.
The artwork is housed in its original late 19th century giltwood frame, beautifully patinated over time. On the reverse is the original dealer’s label from J. Quintana Antigüedades, Passeig de Gracia, Barcelona, confirming the artwork’s long-standing presence on the European antiques market.
This is not a decorative poster but a museum-quality Belle Époque chromolithograph, ideal for collectors of religious art, European prints, or high-end interior decoration.
Condition
The chromolithograph is in very good antique condition with naturally aged paper, light foxing, and gentle toning consistent with its 130+ years of age.
On the reverse, there are visible areas of professional paper restoration, likely carried out decades ago before the piece was sold by J. Quintana Antigüedades. These stabilized areas do not affect the image or front presentation and are typical for valuable 19th century works preserved for long-term display.
The original giltwood frame shows authentic wear, small losses, and patina, all consistent with its age and adding to its historical character.
