An outstanding pair of tall Japanese Satsuma vases from the Meiji period, distinguished by their elegant elongated bottle form and refined proportions. At approximately 38 cm high, these vases command attention and are clearly intended as statement pieces rather than purely decorative objects.
The craftsmanship is of a very high order. The decoration is densely applied across the entire surface, reflecting an approach far removed from standard export wares. The extensive use of fine gold pointillé is especially noteworthy, with countless tiny gold dots forming a textured surface that interacts beautifully with light.
Raised moriage elements further enhance the sense of depth, particularly in the bird and floral motifs. As lighting changes, the vases reveal new highlights and tonal variations, creating a dynamic visual experience that rewards close viewing from different angles.
By quality and technique, these works sit comfortably within the upper tier of Satsuma production, comparable to Yōzan or Kinkōzan-level craftsmanship. The lack of a signature may indicate production for the domestic Japanese market, where fine works were often left unmarked.
Condition is very good overall, with only minor age-related wear and discreet hairline cracks to the rim of one vase, which do not detract from the overall presentation.
