This beautiful Japanese tea cabinet, known as a chadansu (茶箪笥), is a refined and rare piece of furniture originally designed for the storage and display of tea utensils. Composed of two separate sections, the cabinet combines practical functionality with a rich decorative quality, characteristic of high-quality examples from the late Taishō period.
Dimensions: height 134.5 cm, width 90.5 cm, depth 33.5 cm.
The cabinet is constructed around a light yet stable core of kiri wood (paulownia), traditionally used for storage furniture thanks to its excellent moisture-regulating properties. The visible surfaces are finished with beautifully figured keyaki wood veneer (Japanese zelkova), distinguished by its lively, flowing grain pattern. This grain is further enhanced by a decorative finishing technique that adds depth and movement. Over time, the wood has developed a warm, deep patina.
Layout – lower section
The lower cabinet is practical and well balanced, featuring:
– six drawers with original metal handles
– a storage compartment with sliding doors and an interior shelf
This section was intended for heavier or less fragile tea utensils and accessories.
Layout – upper section
The upper cabinet is more elaborately designed and clearly intended for display:
– sliding glass doors
– one drawer
– a beautifully organically shaped display shelf, typical of chadansu and designed to elegantly present tea bowls
– a compartment with sliding doors lined with textile featuring a delicate floral motif
– a compartment with a glass door, lined inside with silver-coloured paper that subtly reflects light
– an additional compartment with wooden sliding doors
The variety of materials and textures creates a layered, almost architectural interior composition.
The cabinet is in very good condition, with light and honest signs of use that enhance its authenticity without detracting from its overall appearance.
This chadansu instantly brings an authentic Japanese atmosphere into an interior. Both functional and visually striking, it is an exceptional piece of furniture—ideal for displaying ceramics, tea bowls, and objects, yet strong enough to stand alone as a statement piece.
A rare and characterful Japanese tea cabinet in which craftsmanship, aesthetics, and history come together in a natural and harmonious way.
