Giovanni giacomo van lint (rome 1723 - 1790) attributed
view of rome with the trevi fountain
oil on canvas (50 x 62 cm - framed 61 x 74 cm)
this work is part of a series of three paintings, along with views of piazza navona and san giovanni in laterano.
this splendid view of rome presented here, depicting the world-famous trevi fountain with palazzo poli behind it, is of excellent quality and is attributed to the roman landscape painter giovanni giacomo van lint (rome 1723 - 1790).
this is the largest of the eternal city's famous fountains. It stands in the square of the same name, offering a picturesque view at the intersection of the narrow streets of the historic center. Built from 1732 to 1762 at the behest of pope clement xii, according to a design by architect nicola salvi.
let's see, in detail, the majestic stone cliff that rests on palazzo poli, allowing the water to flow into the large basin surmounted by the statue of oceanus, driving a shell-shaped chariot.
the view is characterized by its luminous chromatic tone, with the fading sunlight instilling a delicate sense of chromatic stillness, a stylistic feature typical of the mature period of our painter, who achieved a solid reputation as a view painter with topographical precision depictions of the city of rome.
the painting, in particular, is a derivation of an engraving by the renowned giuseppe vasi (corleone 1710 – rome 1782), taken from the monumental collection entitled "delle magnificenze di roma antica e moderna" (the magnificence of ancient and modern rome), featuring the most beautiful views of the eternal city, which ensured his great fame, thanks above all to the consistently original and perspective-captivating compositions and the never-predictable choice of subjects.
giuseppe vasi, who reveals the full extent of his graphic creativity in this monumental work, became an important point of reference for the view painters active in rome: it was common for artists of the time to reference his prints—as happened in venice with visentini's engravings—to create precise iconographies of places.
views like ours, in particular, were created by giovanni giacomo van lint to satisfy collectors and sophisticated travelers, especially english, german, and french, who visited the city during their "voyage d'italie" (voyage of italy), eager to possess a "souvenir" image of rome in its most expansive and characteristic dimension.
for this reason, he became a much-admired painter and was very successful among foreigners visiting rome, who purchased his small-scale views and landscapes, which were thus more easily transportable. So much so that almost all of his paintings are now found in private european collections, particularly those in england.
