The piece was carved from a slab of celluloid, not bakelite though it definitely appears as bakelite. It is a hand carved and painted piece. Brooches like these were a common feature on frocks and hats and were sold en masse at dime and dry goods stores. They added a bit of cheer during a time when economic hardship was common. See less
