This is a signed DUX midcentury modern tuxedo sofa covered in original Jack Lenor Larsen velvet upholstery. The original owner purchased this piece in the late 1960’s “at a nice furniture store in Philadelphia” and treasured it for over 50 years.
The sofa has classic tuxedo lines with the arms the height as the back. The back is slightly tilted back for greater lounging. There are 4 detached back cushions and 4 detached seat cushions, along with 2 detached tufted cushions at each arm. The sofa retains its original Jack Lenor Larsen upholstery called “Waterlillies 105,” a vibrant batik printed cotton velvet with the colors of orange and yellow. (Note: The Met has Waterlillies 105 in its permanent collection.) The sofa has a kiln-dried wood frame, round wooden legs stained medium brown, and it is signed DUX under the seat cushions.
The midcentury era sofa is in very good vintage condition, well preserved for its age. The sofa is sturdy, the springs are supportive, and the cushions are comfortable. The original upholstery is jaw-dropping gorgeous and largely intact. However, there is some wear on the arms, some holes, sun fading on the back, and minor staining. Please see photos for more details about the condition of the sofa.
The sofa measures 107” wide, 34” deep, and 25” tall with a 16.75” seat height and 25” arm height. The seat depth is 18 inches.

ABOUT JACK LENOR LARSEN: Jack Lenor Larsen (August 5, 1927 – December 22, 2020) was an American textile designer who was known for his distinctive hand-woven furnishing fabrics with random repeats in variegated, natural yarns. His works are noted to have been inspired by his early life in the Pacific Northwest, with a focus on "moody, misty landscapes, and Asian cultural influences". He also brought in international influences into his work. He brought Indonesian dyeing techniques of Ikat and Batik to American audiences. Larsen's works are preserved in the collections of major museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art, Victoria and Albert Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, Musée des Arts Décoratifs at the Louvre, and Minneapolis Institute of Art. He is one of only two design houses to have been the subject of an exhibition at the Palais du Louvre. Some of the private collections of Larsen’s works are at Frank Lloyd Wright's house Fallingwater, and Eero Saarinen's Miller house.
