This example is uncommon for Langlais, whose avid exploration of the animal kingdom was largely dominated by his carved-wood sculptures. Although, he worked in all mediums, his ceramic works are less recognized. This striking lion in glazed terracotta boasts hand-painted, red eyes and a coin slot for decorative purposes; there is no way of retrieving the coins. Minor wear / loss to black glaze. Otherwise, in excellent, original condition.
'BL.' etched initials to paw (the B is partial).
Originally, from a private Maine collection of Langlais' work acquired directly from the estate.
Ping-pong ball is for scale.
