Discovered on a recent sourcing trip through Santa Fe, this monumental Spanish Colonial–style devotional cross is an extraordinary example of New Mexican ecclesiastical craftsmanship, notable for its rare architectural scale and powerful presence.
Rising an impressive 92 inches in height, the cross is formed in hand-carved wood with a radiant sunburst halo, retaining its original warm gilt surface with a beautifully aged patina developed over decades. The front displays the traditional Passion symbols — including the lance and sponge — arranged in crossed form beneath a crown of thorns and a banner bearing the inscription INRI, all set against a dramatic field of radiating rays.
The reverse reveals its original hand-hewn construction, with visible pegging, tool marks, and early fastening methods that strongly suggest use as a liturgical or processional element, later adapted for permanent display. The scale and structural integrity indicate it was likely created for a church interior, chapel, or devotional setting in the Southwest, where Spanish Colonial forms remained deeply influential into the early 20th century.
This type of object would have served as a focal point in sacred architecture — either mounted behind an altar, carried in religious procession, or installed within a mission-style interior — and today reads as a sculptural work of art of exceptional impact.
Mounted on a custom museum-style stand for stability and presentation, it is equally suited for wall installation if desired.
Art Historical Context:
Large-scale crosses of this kind are closely associated with the devotional traditions of New Mexico and the greater Spanish Colonial Southwest, where local artisans continued centuries-old carving and gilding techniques well into the 19th and early 20th centuries. Monumental examples are increasingly scarce, particularly those retaining their original surfaces and dramatic proportions.
At over seven and a half feet high, this is among the largest Spanish Colonial crosses to appear on the market in recent years.
This piece is intended for interiors where scale and authenticity matter.
Ideal placements include:
A double-height entry or stair hall
Behind a large Spanish or French console
Anchoring a dining room or library wall
A modern gallery-like setting as a sculptural focal point
Layered into a Santa Barbara, Texas, or California Spanish Revival interior
A luxury hospitality or restaurant installation
Its presence allows it to function as both fine art and an architectural element.
