A beautifully crafted antique American lidded splint basket, featuring exceptional handwoven construction and original painted red and green decorative banding. This basket showcases classic New England basket-making traditions, with finely split wood splints, a softly scalloped profile, and a fitted lid with intricate concentric weaving and applied painted accents.
The surface displays a rich, warm patina developed over decades of use, with visible hand-tool marks and age-appropriate wear that underscore its authenticity. The painted elements—executed in deep brick red and muted forest green—retain pleasing remnants of early pigment, adding visual depth and character without overwhelming the natural wood tones. Beneth the pierced wicker top, there is a very fine layer of brass. An attribute we have never seen!
The interior is clean and structurally sound, making this basket both a decorative and functional antique. Lidded baskets of this quality were historically used for sewing, documents, or treasured household items, and are now highly sought after by collectors and interior designers alike.
Likely American, New England region, circa late 19th century.
