The long horizontal composition features sculptural decanters, a goblet, citrus, grapes, and florals, all arranged with a wonderful sense of balance and rhythm. There is so much to love about this piece. The texture of the background almost makes it feel as though the painting is on stone, giving it a real sense of depth and presence. The thick application of paint and raised, expressive brushstrokes give the objects a dimensional, almost sculptural presence, a hallmark of post-war modern studio painting influenced by both European still life traditions and California modernism of the 1950's–1960's. I am also smitten with the color palette, which combines warm, earthy neutrals with vibrant accents of blue and teal, burgundy and pink, and citrus tones. It feels nostalgic to its era, yet interpreted in a distinctly modern way. A traditional still-life composition is made lively, fresh, and visually engaging through color and texture. The painting is housed in its original solid wood frame with a deep walnut finish and a linen border, a combination that feels very much of the period and gives it a refined, gallery-quality presentation. At over four feet wide, it has that perfect mid-century scale for hanging above a sofa, sideboard, or dining banquette, where it becomes an instant focal point. Although the artist has not yet been fully identified, the confident brushwork, beautiful color, and classic post-war still life subject make this a wonderful example of mid-century studio painting and a great addition to a modern or mid-century interior alike.
