Hand-carved from a dense hardwood (most likely walnut), the sculpture displays an impressive treatment of the mane with deeply carved, individually modelled locks, and a highly expressive, naturalistic face. Remnants of original polychromy are still visible, indicating its original function as a decorative element in an important interior (chimneypiece, console or architectural ornament). The style — dynamic yet restrained, with non-academic anatomy and a sober, controlled expression — is characteristic of French Baroque sculpture, dating to the late 17th – early 18th century (circa 1680–1720). The old patina, natural wear and traces of historic woodworm activity are consistent with its age and confirm the authenticity of the piece.
