Vintage Peruvian Woven Textile from Uripa, 1968
A rare and visually striking Peruvian handwoven textile dated 1968 and bearing the name Uripa, a town in the Apurímac region of southern Peru. The textile features bold geometric patterning and woven text reading “Industria Uripa 1968,” indicating a commemorative or institutional origin, likely associated with local production or a regional workshop.
Created during a period of significant industrial and agrarian reform in Peru, the piece reflects a moment when regional identity, local industry, and Indigenous labor were actively celebrated through visual culture. Textiles from this era were often produced not only as utilitarian objects, but also as banners or wall hangings intended for public or civic display.
The composition combines traditional Andean weaving techniques with a distinctly modern, graphic sensibility. A palette of dusty rose, ochre, black, cream, and soft yellow gives the textile strong visual presence while remaining refined and versatile for contemporary interiors. The inclusion of woven typography—an uncommon feature in Andean textiles—further distinguishes this work as a rare example of mid-century Peruvian textile art.
Handwoven from natural fibers, this piece was likely intended as a wall hanging rather than a blanket. It works beautifully as textile art and pairs especially well with modern, eclectic, or design-forward spaces.
