The handle is dramatically carved as a long-necked crane with a sweeping beak, painted eye, and decorative neck markings — a level of sculptural detail rarely seen on utilitarian folk objects. The raised side panels are shaped as stylized wings, each adorned with bold black painted feather motifs in a fluid, calligraphic style.

The body is constructed in the traditional Chinese cooper-staved technique — thin vertical wood staves bound by twisted iron/wire banding — the same method used for centuries in Zhejiang and southern China. The rich warm honey-brown patina and honest wear throughout speak to genuine age and a life well-used.

Historically, crane baskets like this one were used as laundry baskets in rural southern Chinese villages.
