Fabulous bust of the madonna, entirely handcrafted without a mold in majolica ceramic, glazed with lead-rich enamels, partially vitrified, and entirely hand-decorated. Signed under the base with the acronym "epf," one of the marks used by eugenio pattarino's florence factory, dating to the early 20th century.
final considerations on the object:
this madonna is particularly valuable, unusual compared to most of the madonnas created by the artist, which are usually depicted as a full-length sculpture with child. This bust, however, is crafted in the art deco style, much more similar to goldscheider's artistic production. Notice the beauty of the eyes, the curls of the hair, the veil finished in pure gold, and the necklace on the forehead that emerges from the veil, outlining the hair. This object is very reminiscent of austrian artistic creations from the vienna secession period. The red enamel base is also very beautiful, rich in nuances and very vibrant, standing out from the lighter color of the rest of the object. These small details make this sculpture a truly rare piece of art. Also noteworthy is the difficulty in partially vitrification of the object. The ceramic vitrifies, in the second firing, at a temperature of 1400 degrees, and this sculpture is partly vitrified and partly left opaque with a satin finish, a very complex process.
information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
sculptor and ceramist eugenio pattarino was born in florence in 1885. A student of giovanni fattori, he began his artistic career as a sculptor, creating highly significant marble works. In the late 1930s, he opened his own kiln in florence, "c.a.p.e.f." (ceramiche artistiche professor eugenio pattarino), where he created majolica and terracotta pieces in modern, traditional, and antique styles of great artistic importance. Renowned ceramists from all over italy collaborated with the factory; eugenio pattarino died in 1971.
