Monumental Karl Springer Goatskin Lacquer Credenza/Sideboard
America, circa 1970s–1980s
This exceptional monumental credenza is a powerful example of Karl Springer’s mastery of luxury materials, architectural proportion, and immaculate surface finish. Executed in hand-applied goatskin lacquer in a warm ivory tone, the piece exhibits the subtle organic veining and tonal variation that define Springer’s finest work—celebrated precisely because no two surfaces are ever identical.
The elongated, softly rounded form—measuring an impressive 110 inches wide—is visually anchored by a recessed plinth base and crowned with a continuous top edged by a discreet bronze/brass accent band, a signature Springer detail that adds refinement without ornament. The facade is organized in a disciplined, symmetrical composition: four central drawers flanked by two large cabinet doors, creating both visual rhythm and exceptional functionality.
The top drawer is fitted as a velvet-lined flatware drawer, with original compartmental dividers intact—an unmistakable indicator of custom, high-end production. Below, three additional deep drawers provide generous storage. Each drawer measures approximately 33" W x 6" H x 15" D. The flanking cabinet doors open to reveal spacious interiors with fixed shelving, ideal for serving ware, bar storage, or media concealment.
Of note: the right cabinet door retains its original protective interior laminate panel, which shows a stable crack that does not penetrate through the panel and does not affect structural integrity or exterior presentation. This is a condition detail worth noting rather than a detraction and is consistent with age and use in large-scale lacquered furniture.
Springer’s work occupies a unique position at the intersection of American Modernism, Art Deco revival, and bespoke luxury design.
