Southwest-Style Mid-Century Sunburst Console Table with Travertine Base and Glass Top
USA circa 1980s
A striking and sculptural mid-century console table executed in the Southwest sunburst tradition, combining hand-forged wrought iron, gilt accents, travertine stone, and plate glass. Designed as a dramatic half-moon form, the base features a radiating sun motif, with undulating iron rays extending from a central arc and punctuated by applied gilt circular medallions that read as stylized solar discs.
The ironwork with subtle irregularities and hammer texture was intentionally retained, lending the piece a strong artisanal character. The dark patinated iron contrasts beautifully with the warm gilt highlights and the pale, architectural travertine plinth below. The stepped stone base provides both visual weight and stability, grounding the expressive metalwork in a distinctly mid-century architectural language.
A rectangular glass top floats above the structure, allowing the sunburst composition to remain fully visible while providing a clean, functional surface. The table’s shallow depth and symmetrical half-circle silhouette make it ideal for placement against a wall as an entry console, sofa table, or gallery accent.
This type of sculptural furniture emerged in the postwar period, particularly in the American Southwest and California, where modernist design principles were often blended with regional symbolism, desert iconography, and traditional wrought-iron craftsmanship. The result is a piece that feels at once modern, symbolic, and timeless.
