Large Pair of Venetian Gilt & Polychromed Tole Candle Sconces
Italy, circa 1890s
26" H x 15" W x 9" D
This impressive pair of late 19th-century Venetian wall sconces exemplifies the enduring influence of Baroque ornament revived in Italy during the final decades of the 1800s. Executed in hand-worked iron and richly finished with remnants of gilt and warm polychromy, each sconce is conceived as a deeply sculptural architectural element rather than a purely utilitarian light fixture.
The design is dominated by boldly cut acanthus leaves and scrolling foliage arranged in a symmetrical, shield-like composition. A central flower-form bobeche projects forward to hold a candle, framed by sinuous arms and layered leafwork that create dramatic depth and shadow. The metalwork displays crisp chasing and hand-pierced detailing characteristic of Venetian workshops, with visible hammer marks and construction joints attesting to traditional forging techniques.
Traces of original gilding and painted surface survive throughout, now softened by time into a nuanced, golden-bronze patina that enhances the sculptural relief. The surfaces show honest age, oxidation, and wear consistent with over a century of use, contributing to their authenticity and visual richness.
Originally intended for candle illumination, these sconces may be enjoyed as traditional candle sconces or—at the buyer’s discretion—professionally electrified after purchase to accommodate modern lighting preferences, allowing for flexible use in both historic and contemporary interiors.
Substantial in scale and presence, this pair is well suited for flanking an entry, fireplace, or architectural niche, where their dramatic silhouettes and historic character can be fully appreciated. A striking example of Venetian decorative metalwork from the late 19th century, blending craftsmanship, ornament, and architectural drama.
Condition: Good antique condition with surface wear, oxidation, and losses to gilding consistent with age. Structurally sound. Unwired.
