Manufactured by Knoll-Associates, Inc. and upholstered at the Steinway Street facility in Long Island City, New York, these chairs date to approximately 1955–1962, as indicated by period labels and construction details. The chairs feature chrome-plated flat steel frames with correct early proportions, paired with original button-tufted leather cushions exhibiting a rich, naturally aged patina. The upholstery retains early production details, including wide leather loop attachments sewn directly to the cushions, wrapping around the frame — a hallmark of 1950s Knoll manufacture. The leather displays characteristic tonal variation, soft creasing, and hand-set buttons, consistent with mid-century craftsmanship. Both chairs present as a well-matched pair, with uniform materials, construction, and wear, suggesting they have remained together since original manufacture. The frames show appropriate age-related wear, while the leather has developed a warm, supple surface highly prized by collectors. An excellent example of one of the most iconic designs of the 20th century, this early pair embodies the material quality, handwork, and historical significance associated with Knoll’s early Barcelona chair production.
