Celebrate the artistry of vintage needlework with this stunning handmade Bargello pillow, crafted in 1971 by the late textile artist T. Lu Nixon. Measuring 16” x 16”, it features a mesmerizing geometric pattern in earthy tones of brown, cream, black, and beige—arranged in concentric diamonds and zigzags that evoke the rhythm and symmetry of a hand-pieced quilt.
The design is a striking example of Bargello needlepoint, a historic technique that originated in 17th-century Florence. Known for its flame-like motifs and vertical stitches of varying lengths, Bargello (also called Florentine work) creates bold, repetitive patterns that feel both meditative and dynamic. This particular piece showcases a basket-weave variation with a central diamond motif, framed by radiating zigzags and corner accents that add depth and movement.
A Hidden Floral Detail
Adding a touch of whimsy and individuality, a few tiny embroidered flowers appear just right of center—an unexpected flourish that sets this piece apart and hints at the artist’s playful spirit.
Materials & Condition
The front is worked in richly textured wool, while the back is finished in a mossy colored soft velvet. The pillow is in excellent vintage condition, with only minor wear to the velvet corners—consistent with age and use.
