This Daruma figure is handcrafted using Tsugaru lacquer (Tsugaru-nuri),
one of Japan’s most renowned traditional crafts.
Tsugaru lacquer is celebrated for its exceptional durability
and its richly layered, time-intensive finishing techniques,
developed and refined in northern Japan over centuries.
Daruma figures have been cherished in Japan since the Edo period
as symbols of good fortune, protection, and perseverance.
The traditional black Daruma offers a modern, sophisticated presence
that works beautifully in contemporary interiors.
This piece is finished in Kara-nuri, the most iconic style of Tsugaru lacquer.
The process involves repeatedly applying layers of lacquer,
creating raised textures using a special honeycomb-textured spatula,
adding colored lacquer and metal powder,
and polishing the surface to reveal its distinctive depth and pattern.
Each step requires precision, experience, and time.
Because each Daruma is handcrafted individually,
no two pieces are exactly alike.
Variations in pattern, texture, and coloration
are inherent to Tsugaru lacquer
and are considered part of its character and value.
With its many layers of lacquer,
this Daruma is exceptionally durable
and designed to be enjoyed for generations.
It serves beautifully as a decorative object,
a meaningful symbol of good fortune,
and an elegant gift representing Japanese craftsmanship.
