Bouillotte lamps originated in late 18th-century France, named after the popular card game "Bouillotte" (similar to early poker). These lamps were placed at the center of gaming tables to provide light for players. Key features include:
A brass (or gilt bronze) base with 2–4 candle arms (forming a candelabra-like structure).
A metal tole shade (painted or lacquered tin/metal, often black, green, red, or yellow) that's heat-resistant for candles.
An adjustable shade mechanism (originally slid down via a key or finial as candles burned to reduce glare and focus light).
