This is a very rare and wonderfully fun object to own. This camel originated from a 19th-century French carousel—a period when carousels were crafted with exceptional artistry and attention to detail. During the late 1800s, French carousel makers such as Gustave Bayol and the Limonaire brothers were renowned for producing elaborately carved and beautifully painted animals. Each figure was created with remarkable realism and character, often carved from wood and finished by skilled artisans.
This camel retains its original glass eye, a distinctive feature that adds to both its authenticity and charm. As is common with carousel figures of this age, it shows expected condition issues, including wear and losses on each of its feet from years of use and travel. Carousels of this era were not only amusement rides but also traveling works of art, and surviving animals from them are now highly collectible. This camel is an excellent example of that craftsmanship and history.
