The "Dorset Canterbury" | An Authenticated Hall BM Masterpiece
Provenance: Originally curated for a sophisticated New York City residence before being moved to a prominent 16,000 sq. ft. estate in Dorset, Vermont. This exceptional piece was sited against iconic Pierre Frey Chinoiserie in a distinguished private library/ keeping room.
The Transformation: From Estate Oak to Mahogany Luster
While found in its original 1910 "estate" oak state, this authenticated S. Hall & Sons (Birmingham) revolving rack has undergone a restoration:
* The "Mahogany" Alchemy: Through a master-level grain-leveling process by the Antique Doctor (Charlton, MA), the original open-grain oak has been transformed into a glass-smooth mahogany luster. This deep, formal finish provides the necessary "gravity" to anchor the soaring brass framework.
* Architectural Detail: The "Pagoda" or cathedral-style wirework features a complete set of original, hand-turned brass finials. Each finial retains its honest Edwardian patina, a conscious preservation choice to maintain the piece's 110-year-old soul.
* Neoclassical Grace: The front is centered by a refined Hepplewhite-style brass plate, a sophisticated Edwardian nod to 18th-century Georgian formality.
Mechanical Perfection
* Stabilized Tripod: The common "tripod wobble" is now steady. The upper rack rotates with more of a smooth, precise motion.
Key Features
* The Maker: Stamped "Hall BM" on the underside, authenticating it as a genuine product of the premier English brass foundry.
Brass is lightly tarnished with original patina.
