A magnificent pair of large Japanese lidded jugs, crafted from the finest vitrified hard-paste porcelain, both marked under the base with a red Japanese ideogram under the glaze, one of the many marks of Japanese Imari porcelain. The pair can be dated to the second half of the 19th century, based on the jugs' shape, style, type of decoration, and model, and the beautiful patina, especially under the base, supports our dating. The two jugs are entirely hand-decorated with floral and foliage decorations in classic blue and red, among the oldest decorations of Imari manufactures. The two lids are adorned with two Foo dog-shaped knobs finished in pure gold, and the two handles, also in gilded porcelain, are composed of two intertwined porcelain bands. To support our attribution, we have included in the last photo two jugs very similar in shape and style of decoration, both attributed to 19th-century Japanese Imari porcelain.
