Late 19th Century - Early 20th Century Travel Dog Crate. Manufactured by Backus & Sons of Detroit, Michigan. Great, functional piece. I believe it to be oak with air cutouts and areas to add food and water. These were used primarily for railroad travel and places where the dog did not accompany the owner when traveling. It was designed where someone could feed and water the dog without having to open the crate. This happens to be a small version of the crate. The top comes off of this one to reveal the interior. The door knob, handles and hinges are brass and the reinforcing edges are steel. The crate is on casters and rolls easily. There is a small pice missing on the top at the edge (pictured). Just leave the door open and add a crate pad or pillow and it can become your pet's antique safe place within your living or family room. This is a great novelty piece.
