THE HISTORY: Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933) was a leading artistic talent in late-19th through early 20th-century America -- best known, of course, for the elaborate leaded glass lamps and windows and iridescent glass vases now featured at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Tiffany was the son of Charles Lewis Tiffany, the founder of the luxury goods store Tiffany & Co. He received early training as a painter and traveled extensively in Europe. By 1879, he became a partner in the short-lived but influential decorating concern Louis C. Tiffany and Associated Artists. In 1883 Tiffany broke off on his own, and by 1892 he produced work as Tiffany Glass & Decorating Company. By 1902 his firm entered what was perhaps its most prolific period under the name Tiffany Studios. Although Tiffany himself retired in 1918, the company operated until 1928.

In the later 20th century, Meyda Tiffany began reproducing Tiffany Studios' original designs.

THE DESIGN: The 'Favrile'' features an intricately-modeled, mahogony-bronzed cast-metal base lily-pad base from which spring fine-art glass lily flower shades. See less
