Antique Japanese Sake Jar Table Lamp, Meiji–Early Shōwa Period
A striking and highly sculptural antique Japanese ceramic sake storage jar, expertly converted into a one-of-a-kind table lamp. Originally produced for commercial use by a Japanese sake merchant, this substantial vessel dates to the late Meiji to early Shōwa period (circa 1890–1930).
The hand-glazed porcelain body features bold cobalt blue calligraphy, floral decoration including chrysanthemum motifs (a symbol of longevity and refinement), and red seal marks. At the shoulder, blue characters read 登録商標 (tōroku shōhyō), meaning “registered trademark,” indicating the jar was made for branded commercial distribution rather than household use—an important detail distinguishing authentic merchant ware from later decorative reproductions.
The vessel retains its original dispensing port near the base, once fitted with a plug for pouring sake, further confirming its utilitarian origins. The softly rounded form is accented by molded relief bands and applied side lugs, with a rattan-wrapped handle detail that adds texture and warmth.
Professionally converted into a lamp in the mid- to late-20th century, the piece is mounted on a discreet lucite base and paired with a neutral fabric shade that allows the dramatic ceramic body to remain the focal point. The conversion is clean, balanced, and fully functional, making this lamp equally suited to traditional, eclectic, or modern interiors.
A rare and evocative lighting piece that blends Japanese history, graphic artistry, and sculptural presence.
