Wonderful figurine depicting a little girl with a chicken, made of vitrified hard-paste porcelain, polychrome, entirely hand-decorated, signed under the base with a blue underglaze mark, with the letter "M," a crown underneath, and an X underneath, and finally the inscription "Foreign" in Italian. The sculpture dates back to the late 19th century, between 1880 and 1900. The artistic quality of the object is extremely high; note the simultaneously beautiful and charming face and the exquisite dress, richly pleated. Finally, the ceramic mix is excellent, hard and rich in kaolin, a material typical of the earliest porcelains, when this material was not yet exhausted.
Artist and/or manufacturer information:
The underglaze blue mark is very similar to those used by the Capodimonte factory, the manufacturer to which we can attribute the authorship of this sculpture, as is the style, which echoes many elements of the factory's late 19th-century artistic production. The object likely belongs to those artistic productions destined for foreign countries, usually exported to England, for which a different mark was also used, making it a rather rare piece. Capodimonte porcelain owes its name to the hilly area of Naples, where in the first half of the 18th century, King Charles of Bourbon and his wife Maria Amalia of Saxony founded the Royal Factory of Capodimonte. In addition to the National Museum of Capodimonte, today the Royal Factory of Capodimonte Porcelain is home to the Caselli Institute, the advanced school of Capodimonte porcelain. The porcelain produced by this famous factory is also preserved in valuable quantities at the Duca di Martina Museum, at the Villa Floridiana, at the Filangieri Museum and at the Diego Aragona Pignatelli Cortes Museum.
