Beautiful pitcher made of rather thick, acid-etched blown glass paste, with a hot-applied, hand-applied handle. The entire glass surface is entirely bussonata (orange peel) embossed, using both tools and acids to give the pitcher a satin finish. The glass is rich in iridescent hues, ranging from the green of the base to the orange of the handle and mouth. Made by the prominent French artist Georges de Feure, a painter and designer born in France in 1868 and died in 1943. Signed with acid under the base, it dates to the very early decades of the 20th century.
Information on the artist and/or manufacturer:
Georges de Feure, pseudonym of Georges Joseph van Sluijters (Paris, September 6, 1868 – Paris, November 26, 1943), was a French painter and designer of great artistic importance. In the 1890s, he was recognized by Pierre Puvis de Chavannes as one of the most important painters of French Symbolism. To finance his work, he became an illustrator for the Courrier français, Le Figaro Illustré. His fame as a Symbolist painter and his experience as a poster designer prompted the art dealer Siegfried Bingad to commission him to design the façade of the Art Nouveau pavilion at the 1900 Universal Exhibition in Paris. Bingad also commissioned de Feure, Eugène Gaillard, and Édouard Colonna to design two interiors for the same pavilion. The artist boasts numerous important auction results, participation in numerous artistic events and the winning of numerous awards and gold medals. This piece has an attribution mark,
