A fabulous glazed and vitrified ceramic jug, entirely hand-crafted on a lathe and decorated with bunches of grapes and vine leaves in greenish yellow on a black background. Signed under the base by the Squarciarelli factory, made in Grottaferrata, near Rome, by the Tidei brothers in the early decades of the 20th century. Note the beauty of the rich, brilliant vitrification with boron and lead-rich glazes that characterized the artistic production of this famous Roman factory and give the piece a particularly shiny sheen. The ceramic is very thick, and the jug's shape is also very beautiful, with a very rounded bowl-shaped belly, a rather wide banded handle, and a beautiful, very long, beak-shaped mouth that extends forward. Finally, the jug's dimensions are good, and it is quite large.
Information on the artist and/or manufacturer:
The "Squarciarelli" artistic ceramics factory, also known as the "Fratelli Tidei" factory, was founded in Squarciarelli, Grottaferrata, in the province of Rome, by brothers Eolo and Augusto Tidei in 1921 and remained active until 1938. The factory quickly became a veritable coterie of artists, many of whom were active in the capital and often connected to the artistic circle of Duilio Cambellotti. A hallmark of the factory's production is the use of special oxides, such as chromium for green and selenium for red, as well as a special glaze based on boron and lead, which gives the decorations a distinctive brilliance. In the last photo, we've included additional historical information about the factory for those who want to learn more, including many of the trademarks used, including our own.
